Coaching the Game of
Life
By MARIANNE SULLIVAN NEW JERSEY MONTHLY, October, 2002
In the year since terrorism hit so close to home, many of us have
reassessed our priorities. A growing number of New Jerseyans have gone so far
as to hire so-called life coaches to help thyem achieve newly amended goals and
improve the quality of their lives.
"They want a big change but need a
strategy to put that plan into action," says Lisa
Taylor Huff of Mendham, a member of the New Jersey Professional
Coaches Association. Founded six years ago, the group today has nearly 100
members, some of whom provided pro bono support to those affected by the events
of September 2001.
"9/11 struck a chord," says Scotch Plains coach
Donna Gerhauser, the association's vice president. The change occurred almost
immediately, recalls Mike Mulcahy, a Verona-based coach who, in the days after
the attacks, lent moral support to overwhelmed human-resource workers in Jersey
City.
Peter Yurowitz, a coach in Highland Park, says he starts by
asking clients to make a list of their strengths. "It puts people in a positive
frame of mind," he says, "and from there they can build a road to success."
Alas, revamping one's life doesn't come cheap. Most coaches normally
charge $200 to $500 per month for weekly half-hour phone sessions.
